About Tisi Dutton, LicAc MBAcC
Tisi Dutton began her acupuncture studies in 2008, and in 2011 was awarded a BA (Hons) in Acupuncture (First Class) from Oxford Brookes University and a Licentiate in Traditional Acupuncture from the College of Traditional Acupuncture. Since then she has worked in private practice, at both The Well in Kings Heath and The Natural Health Centre at Kings Norton. She works in Traditional Five Element Acupuncture. The theoretical framework which this discipline encompasses works on the understanding there are five elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood) that play their part in influencing and balancing the physical, mental and emotional health of the individual. Tisi finds trying to understand what is needed to allow a person to flourish, and balancing the inter-connection between these elements within the context of Chinese medical theory a constant source of pleasure. There is always an element of partnership between the individual coming for acupuncture and the practitioner. Albert Schweitzer wrote of medicine that “It is our duty to remember at all times and anew that medicine is not only a science, but also the art of letting our own individuality interact with the individuality of the patient.” This is equally applicable to an acupuncturist.
Tisi continues to develop her understanding of acupuncture and the field of Chinese Medicine as a whole by taking part in an ongoing programme of professional development, through courses, peer development and reading. Courses have included subjects such as electro and auricular acupuncture, moxabustion, gua sha, trigger point therapy and musculo-skeletal conditions. She has also taken classes with Niki Bilton, an eminent acupuncturist and educator specialising in Five Element practice.
Tisi was invited to join the teaching staff of The Acupuncture Academy in Leamington Spa in 2014, and has worked for them as a supervisor and teaching assistant. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council.
Prior to training as an acupuncturist, Australian-born Tisi worked in Arts Administration in both Australia and the UK, for companies which included The Royal Opera House, Aldeburgh Productions and Glyndebourne. Before that, she worked as a classically trained singer. This work wasn't as far removed from acupuncture as it might seem: “I’ve always been interested in how an individual can make the most out of the potential they have to offer; the beauty of acupuncture is that it gently makes use of the resources a person already has, in order for the body, mind and spirit to work more efficiently and effectively”.
